+ What is the weather like there? What clothes should I bring?

When you arrive in August, the temperature will be very warm, usually between 90 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This weather will continue throughout September. Students usually opt to wear shorts/skirts and short sleeve polo shirts throughout this time of the school year.
2020年欧洲杯小组赛赛程As fall rolls into the South, the temperature will drop to between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature will stay moderate throughout November and December with the temperature dropping down to 50 degrees Fahrenheit before we leave for the holiday break. Students will want to have long pants and sweatshirts, which are available to purchase directly from the school.
In the early months of the spring semester, the temperature can drop to 35 degrees Fahrenheit in the mornings. Some weeks the high temperature will be 40 degrees Fahrenheit; other weeks the high temperature will be 55 degrees Fahrenheit. It will be important for students to layer their clothing throughout January and February.

The variety of clothing needed throughout the school year can be cumbersome to bring to school. We will work with students to go shopping for new clothes or order from the school uniform store. We also provide access to multiple online stores for Brandon Hall branded clothing.

We make the assignments on grade and shared common interests. Also, we welcome requests, especially from returning students.

+ What is the best time for a parent to visit?
Parents are welcome throughout the school year; however, there are two specific times when parents can be on campus to learn more about the school. In October, either the second or third week of the month, parents are invited to campus for parent conferences. After the conferences, students will be on break for five days. This is a great time to come to campus and then enjoy the city of Atlanta.
During the spring semester, parents are invited to campus for the curriculum fair. The fair takes place during the second week of February and allows parents to follow the student schedule. We want parents to be able to engage with teachers on the curriculum and learn about the Brandon Hall academic experience.
+ Where can my son or daughter stay when the school is closed?
During long weekends such as Labor Day, the dormitory will be open for students. We will provide opportunities for the students to explore Atlanta and the surrounding areas. We also encourage 7-day boarders to spend time with the families of day students and 5-day boarders.
On longer holidays, we encourage families to identify local families who the student can stay with over the break. The school may be able to assist when needed to find a placement. It is our goal to make sure students are safe and happy during school closures.
For shorter breaks (Fall Break and Winter Break), students may reside on campus for a fee.
+ What is there for students to do on the weekend?
Each weekend, students will be presented with options for activities either on campus, such as athletic events and movie nights, or off-campus. The off-campus events will sometimes come with a fee and it is up to the student to pay the fee in advance of the trip. Because we are located in the greater Atlanta area, students will have a large variety of events to partake in throughout the school year.
+ Are there different types of boarding students?
Brandon Hall offers five and seven-day boarding options. Five-day boarders must have a local guardian who can provide transportation to and from campus. Five-day boarders are expected to leave campus after the end of the school day on Fridays and return to campus by 6 p.m. on Sundays.
+ Are the students safe on campus?
The Brandon Hall campus is a gated campus located in a suburban neighborhood. We are well off the beaten path of Atlanta traffic. Any guests who arrive at the campus must pass through our security protocols. There is always a staff member available for direct supervision at all times of the day. Additionally, there is a staff member on-call at all times during the evening/nighttime hours.
+ How are international students supported throughout the school year?
The Admissions Department works directly with the academic and boarding departments to make sure all international students are set up to succeed from the moment they are enrolled at Brandon Hall. In the residence halls, the resident faculty are available to guide students through any academic or social issues that arise. During the academic day, each student will be assigned an advisor. The advisories meet weekly to discuss any academic or social issues that are unique to the school day. Advisories are typically a mix of international and domestic students and is a great time to get to know peers in the school community.
Furthermore, the school employs a full-time counselor for all students. The counselor is also part of the larger student services team that meets weekly to discuss student concerns. This team is in constant contact with guardians to ensure students are supported at all times.
+ What opportunities are there to gain knowledge of American culture?
Because we are an American boarding school, everything from living with students from across the United States to participating in one or more of the clubs and activities groups available to students during and after the school day. These help students to learn about American culture from their peers.
Field trips taken by classes throughout the Atlanta area as well as weekend trips to areas outside of the city to further their knowledge of the culture.
+ What opportunities are there for international students to learn English?
For students who do not use English as their primary language, Brandon Hall offers ESL I, ESL II, and ESL III classes. The classes are developmentally based and designed to help students refine their English skills so they may join our college preparatory courses.
2020年欧洲杯小组赛赛程Brandon Hall offers a summer program: The ELL Global Village™. Students will balance academic classroom study with daily cultural and educational experiences around the Atlanta area. ELL Global Village™ is an intensive program, which helps students refine their communication skills and prepares them for future success. In our residential hall, students typically board with peers from a different country than their own to broaden their global horizons.
Each student’s English level will be assessed, and he/she will be placed into a group accordingly. Native and non-native English speakers collaborate for a truly global experience. Our ELL instructor works with beginning English speakers, all the way up through advanced.
+ How do you make sure students succeed academically?

This time was created to allow the students to check in with teachers, catch up on work, get started on homework or simply take a breather on the day. Brandon Hall had a Learning Skills Center for students who require more assistance with the curriculum.
The Learning Support Center is designed to help students who struggle with executive functions. Time management, prioritizing, reading comprehension, math and writing skills are developed in the LSC for a class period every day. Literacy help is provided by an Orton-Gillingham reading specialist. Students will be given help with homework completion.
2020年欧洲杯小组赛赛程We work with students on preparing for assignments, time management, using an academic agenda, study skills, and test-taking skills. Support is provided by experienced teachers in English, history, math, and science. Students also receive help with daily assignments.
The Learning Support Center was created to teach students to self-advocate and work to become self-directed learners.
In the residence hall, quiet study time is enforced Sunday through Thursday. For students who need guided homework time, we have faculty available to run a more structured study hall time.
+ Will my son or daughter be prepared to study at an American university?
Yes. Brandon Hall offers courses that prepare students to enter any of the United States colleges and universities.
Also, Brandon Hall students can take advanced placement (AP) courses. If a student takes an AP course and passes the test in that subject, he or she can receive college credit for it. This can help admission to colleges and universities and also help students take higher-level courses once there.
Beginning in their junior year, students can also enter the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. Successful completion of the program will allow students to graduate with an IB Diploma. For more information on the program, please visit the International Baccalaureate page here.
+ What do I need to do to make sure my son or daughter has access to spending money?
Students will need their own money for some activities throughout the school year. Many of our students also have access to bank cards, credit cards or Apple/Google Pay systems. The amount of money that a student may use on campus is at the discretion of the guardian. Please let us know if a student will need to set up a bank account once in the country.
+ What do I need to do to be best prepared for school vacations?
Please review the Academic Calendar for all school vacations and plan accordingly. Students who leave early for a break or arrive late may receive an unexcused absence and have to make up the hours outside of the normal school day. Students who have unexcused absences may not be able to make up the schoolwork that was missed.
